For my first english college class, I wrote a paper on the sexualization concerning a certain outfit associated with The Handmaid’s Tale by Maragret Atwood. Published in 1985, it was studied with great speculation as to the horrific acts that take place in this fictional dystopian future. Yandy, an adult costume company, invented a dress that was originally thought to be sexy by customers.
That was until Twitter got a hold of it. Doesn't Twitter like to make things like this exciting?
I am by no means a great writer, but it was very fun and educational to practice writing a professional article for the first time. In high school, they give you a guideline you have to follow, and if you have a finished product that includes all of the sensible information mad-lib style, you have yourself an A+ paper. Spoiler; I never received that A+ paper.
I'm not sh*tting on these guidelines either; I still follow them today. There's a reason high school teachers keep giving them out. They work.
"The Handmaid’s Tale," is a story I'm deeply passionate about. And seeing the habit draped over a model's chest for sexual entertainment is disrespectful towards not only the author, but towards women who have been claimed as rape victims.
Sex and rape are not the same. Mixing the two is dangerous. It is in this essay that I try my best to articulate the injustice of a costume like this.
Thank you for your time.
